the beginning of monsoon

the beginning of monsoon

the winds of śrāvaṇa
like a newly-wed bride
move around wearing anklets of rain music.
the days are inked with hues of night
and the nights are at their deepest dark.

i’ve waited for this all summer long
translating the gathering and scattering of clouds
and now it's come dancing from the sky
shivering on walls and umbrellas.

i sit by our window
and watch its cadence soak
my daughter’s wonder-filled heart.
i close my eyes. and save it like that. for always.

we sleep cocooned in warm quilts
to the hymn of raindrops
letting our dreams float into the night air
knowing, when we wake next morning,
it will still be there. raining.
