this dawn

this dawn

the world felt like an invitation,
so i slipped my feet into my old leather chappals
and went for a wander in the garden.

the sky was azure and sunlit again,
while the storm slept in the clouds.
the earth was lush and softly breathing.
the grass looked like dwarf paddy fields and
bumbleebees danced over fragrant flowerbeds.

varṣā had stained everything
with her molten love
everywhere i turned,
i found a song
and felt awash with reverence.

memories of a morning from another season
came to mind as i walked unhurried amidst
a man training his dog on a lawn
dusted with sunshine
an old couple sitting on a bench
busy practising pranayama
a young girl striding to and fro
with music plugged into her ear
and a lady gardener intently
sweeping away fallen tree treasures

everyone seemed present with a purpose
i had mine too; to listen, to saturate
and to return rich with thoughts
while the nimbly blowing breeze
resumed carrying birdsongs in its breath.

thank you for sweetening my day
      with your presence too.

let my thoughts come to you
when I am gone
like the afterglow of sunset
at the margin of starry silence
